Critical Issues Facing South Africa
South Africa has the highest rate of rape and one
of the highest rates for child abuse in the world. Rape happens every 26 seconds and statistics show that one out of every
three girls and one out of every 5 boys have been abused during their childhood.
Date rape occurs regularly and girls are offered drugs in drinks at raves without their knowledge or consent. They often wake up in a strange bed having been raped but not
being able to remember anything that happened due to the drugs.
Ritualistic abuse is occurring more regularly - including child pornography and orgies involving children.
Child prostitution is rife. Young girls are running away from home (often pregnant) and are turning to prostitution to keep themselves alive.
Children are being sent back home to live amongst the abusers and rapists because the offenders are released from jail on technicalities. The victims live in fear of their
lives, knowing that the rapist/abuser may retaliate for having being reported to the authorities by them.
Thousands of innocent babies are being aborted and the mothers are being left with emotional and physical scars from the incident.
AIDS is spreading like wildfire. It was predicted that soon 50 % of the population in Africa will be infected with the AIDS virus.
South Africa has the highest divorce rate in the world. The couples as well as their children are suffering emotional scars from the divorce.
The crime rate in South Africa has escalated tremendously over the last 12 years. People need counseling to help them to deal with the traumas they have faced and a
place that they are able to stay where they are able to come to terms with what has happened.
Many young girls are falling pregnant, being cast out of their homes and aborting their unborn children.
Pornography and internet pornography are rapidly increasing even among the "respected" sectors of our society.
Animals in South Africa are not seen as sentient beings and are considered by some population groups as being no more than a possession who needs no love, shelter and do not
need water or nutritious food to survive. The abuse from these or animals in South Africa is horific. Wild and domestic animals are being bought when young and chained up, confined and abused when the owners cannot handle them anymore. Animals, especially goats are tortured to death and die in a
horrific manner during traditional African sacrifices to their forefathers.

Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases are being spread through rape, abuse and prostitution.
The abused often becomes the abuser and unless the abused person is healed and the cycle broken it could have dreadful repercussions for our society.
Prostitution causes adultery. Sexual diseases are often transferred to the adulterous partner who in turns passes it on to their spouse.
Emotional issues such as depression may result.
Unwanted pregnancies and increased rate of abortions.
Behavioural problems and even suicide in teenagers.
Problems in relationships.
Abuse victims may turn to negative coping mechanisms eg. drugs and alcohol to try and forget the abuse.
The emotional scars could lead to relationship, eating and sexual disorders.

The deaths the townships mostly occur in the 20 to 40 age group. This means that a gap is being left in society. Old people are being left to look after the young children and babies. These
older folk often have no employment and very little pension, so poverty and crime is on the increase in these areas.
Thousands of babies are being born with AIDS, which not only causes severe suffering, but also depletes the economy.

Children are no longer being raised in a family with both parents. This has a negative impact on the psychological and developmental growth of the child.
Children are often used as pawns by the parents trying to get back at the ex-marriage partner.
Children from divorced families often turn to an alternative lifestyle or develop abnormal behaviour in an effort to obtain attention from the parents or even in an attempt to get their
parents back together. They sometimes do this when the parent who has custody of them works for long hours and they are left to fend for themselves for long periods of time. This alternative lifestyle could involve crime, drugs, sex, homosexuality, pornography and Satanism.
The scars from their home life is more often than not carried into the children's marriages and the viscious cycle begins again.
