Mary Sadler, born Dutch, immigrated to South Africa when she was still a child.  She grew up in Upington, on the Orange River.  She studied at UCT (BA Languages) and worked as a journalist in Cape Town, London and Amsterdam.  She is married with two full-grown children.  She currently lives on a small holding in the Southern Cape, writing more or less full time.

Sand is an historical novel set in the Kalahari Desert on the northern border of the Cape Colony during  the latter half of the nineteenth century.
